This course is a requirement for the Gender Studies minor. It is a basic gender theory survey that initiates and grounds the student in gender theory for further study and classes in Eastern Mennonite University's Gender Studies minor. It is formulated for underclass women and men and students should take it early in their coursework so that they are prepared for additional classes in the minor. The course combines classic gender theory approaches and frameworks with EMU's mission to prepare students for global leadership.

The class is divided into four areas, each of which could comprise a graduate level class. However, since this is an introductory survey course it is anticipated that further classes in the minor will address these areas in greater development and analytical depth.

The areas of study are:

--The cultural constructions and dynamic historical development of gender as a category of analysis
-- Gender specificity and intersections with race, class, ethnicity & religion
--Themes regarding sexuality and violence by men
--Issues pertinent to women cross-culturally and their lived experience
