VACA 283 is a survey of
western art that presents an overview of important facts and concepts in visual
art and introduces students to a history of art spanning over thirty thousand
years. We will cover the formal and aesthetic
elements of a work of art, as well as examine the religious, social, political,
and philosophical ideas that provide a historical and cultural context to each
timeframe. The course will also introduce appropriate and effective language as
a means to discuss the artwork, and strive to foster the critical thinking
skills necessary to see and think about art with intelligence and
sensitivity.
Art transcends disciplines. The interests and experiences that you bring to this course will enrich the course for everyone. Your active participation is a key factor in making this course relevant to you. Ask questions, make comments, and get involved. We all share a responsibility in the outcome of this course. You’ll get as much out of each class as you put into it.
This course is a Writing Intensive course. In other words, special emphasis will be put on academic writing practice. All written work turned in with Turnitin will be evaluated according to the EMU Writing Standards Rubric.
