Medical Insurance - Mennonite Educators Benefit Plan

EMU currently offers a high deductible plan coupled with a Health Savings Account. For employees working the equivalent of a nine-month load (1,560 hours, 18 SH) or more, EMU will pay 90% of the premium cost of the plan for the employee and 50% of the premium cost for spouse and/or dependent coverage.

The employee has the option to enroll spouse and/or dependents and pay the required premium through payroll deduction on a pre-tax or after-tax basis.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance is provided through Reliance Life. Eligible employees will be provided with life insurance coverage equal to 1½ times their current annual salary up to $150,000 maximum. It is considered a taxable benefit for the amount of life insurance over $50,000. Accidental death or dismemberment coverage is also provided under this policy. The policy expires upon termination of employment or retirement, whichever is first to occur. The premium cost is paid entirely by EMU.

Disability Coverage & Insurance

Short-term Disability

Short-term disability benefits are paid from the general assets of Eastern Mennonite University. In the event of total or partial disability, as defined by a physician, an employee will receive all accumulated paid time off (PTO). After 15 calendar days of disability, the employee will receive compensation equal to 2/3rd of salary (offset by any social security disability and wages earned). NOTE: Faculty do not receive accumulated PTO, however, they are paid in full for the first 30 days of illness or disability.

Long-term Disability

Long-term disability insurance is provided through an insurance plan. Eligible employees receive disability benefits under the following conditions and limitations. The elimination period (period of time an employee needs to be continuously totally or partially disabled) is 180 days. The maximum benefit period for an individual who becomes disabled prior to age 60 is to age 65 or death. For individuals who become disabled at age 60 or later, please see human resources for the maximum benefit period. The premium cost is paid entirely by EMU.

The human resources office should be informed in the event of total or partial disability so that the appropriate paperwork can be initiated.

Other Benefit Plans When On Disability

Employees, who leave active employment at EMU due to a disability, qualifying them for disability insurance, continue to receive certain benefits. Life insurance will continue under a waiver of premium provision, provided by the life insurance carrier, if you become totally disabled as defined by the long-term disability insurance provider. These employees and their spouses shall also receive the benefits as described for retirees and their spouses. See benefits for retired personnel at the end of this section.
